The Clean Marina Program (CMP) is a voluntary designation program that encourages marina facilities to incorporate the Florida Department of Environmental Protection's environmental Best Management Practices (BMPs), which exceed regulatory requirements. {Check your state for simular programs}
The Clean Boater Program established in 2001 s a derivative of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Clean Vessel Act pumpout grant program. It seeks to involve boaters in protecting Florida’s waterways through education on the importance of protecting the state’s native vegetation, wildlife and natural environment. In collaboration with the Clean Marina Program, it provides guidance on adopting environmentally friendly practices, including proper trash management, using bilge socks and fueling collars, EPA Safer Choice products, and practicing good recycling habits.
Safer Choice is a voluntary program that works to advance the mission of the EPA to protect human health and the environment by helping product manufacturers choose the safest chemical ingredients possible.
Direct Release is an additional EPA Safer choice distinction that manufacturers can get for their products if they meet further measures. EPA Safer Choice Direct Release standards require that products intended for use outdoors that are likely to bypass sewage treatment, limiting the time for degradation prior to entering sensitive environments meet additional criteria.
The EPA Safer Choice program includes specific standards for “Direct Release” products.
If you use products in the outdoors and released directly into the environment, you may be familiar with this product classification. And the challenge of finding qualified chemical ingredients.
Direct release products may include boat cleaners, graffiti removers or other transportation cleaners used on-site (i.e. asphalt truck cleaners).
In many cases, the run-off from these products enters a sensitive natural environment directly, bypassing sewage treatment.
Due to the limited window for biodegradation and direct impact on aquatic life, the EPA has developed a stricter set of standards that apply to chemical ingredients used in direct release formulations..
